Training With Love + Science: Essentials of ABA for Dog Professionals

7 September @ 9:00 am - 6:00 pm

$76.54 – $214.19
This conference focuses on training with love and science, the essence of modern applied behavior analysis.
Modern applied behavior analysis is all about learners accessing enriched lives by learning skills through rich schedules of positive reinforcement. Paramount to the teaching and learning that occurs is the individual.
Sarah Owings, KPA-CTP, and a member of the ClickerExpo and Tromplo faculties, will speak to “How ABA Empowers Us To Honor The Individuals in Our Care” at the mini conference we are co-hosting with School For The Dogs NYC September 7. From the abstract of her talk, Sarah says she “will be sharing my 25-year journey as a professional educator, dedicated student of the science of behavior, animal trainer, and human being. Children, husband, dogs, reptiles, birds, cows—my first teachers have always been the “organisms” I’ve had the honor of living with and learning from.
“The gift of ABA is that it encourages practitioners to make informed choices about how to apply what we know about learning and behavior based on objective observation instead of explanatory fictions. This is important because observable behavior is how non-verbal beings communicate their needs. We may never know for sure if an animal is happy or sad or experiencing ennui. In the words of B.F. Skinner, “The organism is always right.” Even seemingly aberrant behavior serves an important function for an individual. Whether it’s incessant barking, jumping on visitors, or stealing and guarding food, when we understand the interplay between behavior and environment we tap into a powerful way to safeguard the emotional lives of our learners. “I need that noise to stop!” “I’m afraid someone will take this precious thing away.” “I enjoy when you pet my belly, but not my feet.” “Let’s play!” Emotions are embedded in the contingencies surrounding behavior. Affirm these contingencies and you are on the path to honoring that individual.
Still other speakers will be talking more detail about what happens around behavioral contingencies and how we can operationalize constructs oft-discussed in dog training in terms of the behaviors the constructs include.
We are offering a one-day flash sale starting at midnight August 07, 2024 to attend this first of its kind conference focusing on training with love and science that is modern applied behavior analysis. For more information and to take advantage of the sale, follow the link below.
